Hydraulic Acid (HA) Injection

Relieve Pain and Achieve your Optimal Quality of Life

HA has the dual role of an anti-inflammatory medication and a joint preserver. It replicates the joints natural lubrication allowing for movement to occur in an environment of reduced friction. This injection technique has been shown to be clinically effective at reducing pain and increasing function for patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee after just one injection for up to six months.

HA can even be repeated every 6 months if symptoms return. Anecdotally, this prophylactic course of treatment can be of great benefit, managing pain, maintaining knee function, and delaying surgery.

HA uses a natural (non-drug) synthetic version of the joint’s natural lubricant and has also been shown to have powerful anti-inflammatory properties.

What conditions and injuries are treated with Hydraulic Acid (HA) Injection?

HA is a naturally occurring substance found in the body, particularly in the skin, joints, and connective tissues. HA has a unique ability to attract and retain water, which makes it an excellent hydrating agent and contributes to its various medical and cosmetic applications.

Injections of HA are used to provide lubrication and cushioning to joints affected by osteoarthritis. These injections are commonly administered in knee joints to reduce pain and improve joint function.

FAQ

Am I suitable for Hydraulic Acid (HA) Injection treatment?

At consultation, your Consultant will be able to tell you if you are suitable. We may need an MRI or x-ray to confirm next steps.

Do Hydraulic Acid (HA) Injections hurt?

The procedure is relatively pain free. Your harvesting site will be numbed with local anaesthetic. If you’re in any pain post-procedure, you will be discharged with pain relief.

Is there any downtime/recovery time following Hydraulic Acid (HA) Injection?

All procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic so within one and three hours of your procedure, patients are typically discharged. All patients should have a chaperone (friend, family member or carer) to collect them after their procedure and remain with them on their journey home.

You are likely to feel mild pain in the joint for two to three days, however the pain can be managed with regular strength painkillers.

Post procedure, you should refrain from strenuous activity for at least two weeks.

What kind of results can I expect from a Hydraulic Acid (HA) Injection?

Patients can feel immediate pain-relief. If this is not the case, do not worry, effects may take some days to come through and research has found it could take between 3-5 days.
