Spondylosis

Using the power of innovative science and modern technology, Dr SW Clinic can help you live your best pain-free life without the need for invasive surgery.

Spondylosis, also known as spinal osteoarthritis, is a common degenerative condition that affects the spine, particularly the cervical (neck) and lumbar (lower back) regions. It is characterised by the gradual wear and tear of the spinal discs, joints, and bones over time.

Spondylosis can manifest in various ways and may involve the following features:

  1. Degenerated Discs: The intervertebral discs between the spinal vertebrae lose hydration and become thinner, reducing their ability to cushion the spine.
  2. Bone Spurs: Over time, the body may develop bone spurs (osteophytes) in response to the degeneration. These can cause pain and may compress nearby nerves.
  3. Facet Joint Changes: The facet joints, which are responsible for spinal stability and movement, can undergo changes, such as arthritis, inflammation, and enlargement.
  4. Stiffness: Spondylosis can lead to stiffness in the affected part of the spine, making it challenging to move comfortably.

Spondylosis is a chronic and progressive condition, but it is manageable.

At Dr SW Clinics, we can treat a range of pain conditions using Regenerative Medicine and pain-relieving injections. If you are tired of living with pain and looking for a non-surgical intervention, then Dr SW Clinics could help you get back to your optimal quality of life.

FAQ

What are he main causes of Spondylosis?

Spondylosis typically develops as a result of aging and long-term use of the spine. The primary factors contributing to spondylosis include:

  1. Aging: The natural aging process can lead to changes in the spine, including the loss of disc hydration and the development of bone spurs (osteophytes).
  2. Wear and Tear: Repeated movements, lifting, and everyday activities can cause stress on the spine and contribute to degeneration.
  3. Genetics: Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to spondylosis, making them more susceptible to developing the condition.
  4. Injury or Trauma: Previous injuries or trauma to the spine can accelerate the degenerative process.

What are the common symptoms of Spondylosis?

The symptoms of spondylosis can vary depending on the location and severity of degeneration. Common symptoms include:

  • Pain: Pain in the affected area of the spine, which may be dull, aching, or sharp.
  • Stiffness: Limited range of motion and stiffness in the spine, which can make certain movements uncomfortable.
  • Nerve Compression: If bone spurs or degenerated discs press on nearby nerves, it can result in radiculopathy (pain radiating down the arms or legs), tingling, numbness, or weakness.
  • Cervical Spondylosis Symptoms: In the neck (cervical spondylosis), symptoms may include neck pain, headaches, and radiating pain down the arms.
  • Lumbar Spondylosis Symptoms: In the lower back (lumbar spondylosis), symptoms may include lower back pain and radiating pain into the buttocks and legs (sciatica).

How do we diagnose at Dr SW Clinics?

Depending on the joint issue you present with, there may be a couple of ways to diagnose your pain and thereby find you a lasting solution.

Firstly, you will have a telephone consultation with one of our highly trained patient advisors. This patient advisor will ask you a series of pre-assessment questions to better understand your personal needs.

You will then be invited for a consultation with one of our leading experts. To better gain an understanding of the problem, the Consultant may suggest you receive an x-ray or an MRI.

What is an x-ray?
A diagnostic test that can help identify what issues are causing the pain.

What is an MRI?
A diagnostic test using a magnetic field and radio waves for a detailed image of both joint and soft tissue.

What is an ultrasound?
Typically a handheld device that provides an on the spot image of the soft tissue.

Once we’ve received the results of your diagnostic tests, our team will be able to advise you on next best steps to get you pain free.
